- This is a document generator, not an accounting system: it does not reverse a payment, update what you owe anywhere, or mark the original invoice as credited.
- Tax is a flat percentage of the subtotal that you type in, never looked up from a rate table or a tax authority.
What this is
This credit note maker shares the invoice maker's engine and adds one line a credit note cannot do without: a plain statement of which invoice it reduces or cancels, built off the engine our own invoice.voided webhook event already describes.
A credit note reverses some or all of an invoice on paper - it names the invoice it reduces, lists what is being credited, and totals to the amount being taken off.
Line items are typed one per line as "description, quantity, unit price", the same shape the invoice maker reads, for the items being credited back.
How to read the result
The "Reduces invoice" line above the table, and in the totals, names the original invoice number so the note can never be read on its own, disconnected from what it is adjusting.
If an original invoice amount is entered for reference, this page flags a credit note that totals more than that amount - a sign the number on one of the two documents is wrong.
Common mistakes
What goes wrong most often, and how to tell.
- Expecting this to reverse the payment or update accounting softwareThis page only builds the PDF. It does not touch a payment, mark the original invoice as credited, or write anything to accounting software - that still has to happen wherever the invoice itself is managed.
- Leaving the original invoice number blankA credit note with no invoice number to point at is just a negative invoice with nothing to tie it to - whoever reads it later has no way to match it against the thing it was meant to reduce.
Questions
What people ask about this tool.
- No. It only builds a PDF that states the credit and the invoice it reduces. Reversing a payment or updating accounting software are separate steps this page does not touch.
- The page flags it with a warning, since a credit note should not usually exceed the invoice it is reducing - worth checking both numbers before sending it.
- Yes - set the line items so the total matches the original invoice's full amount, and the note reads as a full cancellation rather than a partial reduction.
