Shopify DNS record generator

Get the apex A record, the AAAA record and the www CNAME Shopify asks for, with its own one-record-only rule flagged before you publish.

The three records below do not change with this - it only lets the page name your own domain instead of speaking generically.

Result

A, AAAA and www ready for your domain

Add these at the root and at "www" of your domain, after removing any other A record or www CNAME already there.

  • Warning

    Shopify allows only one A record and one www CNAME

    Shopify's own help page states it in exactly these words: "You can have only one A record and one www CNAME record associated with your domain." An existing record at either name is not a second record to add alongside these - it has to be changed to point at Shopify's values instead.

    Edit any existing A record at the root and any existing CNAME at www to the values below, rather than adding these as new, separate records.

  • Info

    The three records below do not need your domain

    Every value Shopify publishes for connecting a domain is the same for every store, so there is nothing to fill in to get them right. Typing your domain only makes this page name it instead of speaking generically.

  • Passed

    Apex A, AAAA and www CNAME, ready to paste exactly as shown

    All three values are fixed by Shopify for every store - there is no per-store substitution, so what is below is already final.

Apex A record to publish

23.227.38.65

At @ (A)

This goes at the root of the domain (shown as "@" in most panels), not a subdomain.

Apex AAAA record to publish

2620:0127:f00f:5::

At @ (AAAA)

Optional if your panel has no AAAA field, but published by Shopify alongside the A record above.

www CNAME to publish

shops.myshopify.com

At www (CNAME)

Only one CNAME is allowed at "www" - change any existing one there to this rather than adding a second. Shopify's own page writes this target with a trailing dot; add one if your panel does not already.

DNS records for your domain

HostTypeValuePriority
@A23.227.38.65-
@AAAA2620:0127:f00f:5::-
wwwCNAMEshops.myshopify.com-

This leaves out MX and any TXT records a mailbox provider needs - Shopify does not touch those, so an existing mail setup is unaffected.

  • This cannot see a store's own domain-connection status inside Shopify admin - it only checks that DNS matches what Shopify asks for, not that Shopify has finished linking the domain on its side.

What this is

This Shopify connect domain DNS records generator writes out the exact apex A record, AAAA record and www CNAME Shopify documents on its own help page, and warns up front about the rule most guides skip: only one A record and one www CNAME are allowed on the domain at all.

Connecting a domain to Shopify through DNS rather than through Shopify's own registrar needs three records: an A record at the root pointing at Shopify's load balancer, an AAAA record alongside it, and a CNAME at "www" pointing at "shops.myshopify.com". All three are the same value for every Shopify store, with nothing store-specific to substitute.

The part a static guide usually buries in a footnote is the limit: Shopify's help page is explicit that only one A record is allowed at the root and only one CNAME at "www" - not that extras are ignored, but that they conflict with the ones Shopify needs there.

How to read the result

There is nothing to configure on this page beyond typing a domain for the label - the three values below are correct the moment they are published, for any store.

The warning about one A record and one www CNAME is the thing worth reading even if everything below looks obvious: a domain moved from another host often still has an old A record or www CNAME sitting in the panel, and that is what breaks a Shopify connection that otherwise looks correctly set up.

Common mistakes

What goes wrong most often, and how to tell.

  • Adding Shopify's A record alongside an old one instead of replacing itA domain moved from a previous site builder or host often already has an A record at the root. Shopify's help page is explicit that only one is allowed there - adding a second rather than replacing the first leaves the domain pointing at two places, which most panels do not resolve the way you would expect.
  • Skipping the AAAA record because the A record alone seems to workThe connection can appear to work over IPv4 with only the A record published, but Shopify's own page lists the AAAA record alongside it as part of the same documented set, not as an optional extra for later.
  • Leaving a previous host's www CNAME in placeThe same one-record rule applies at "www" as at the root: an existing CNAME there from a previous provider has to be deleted first, not left beside the new one pointing at "shops.myshopify.com".

Questions

What people ask about this tool.

  • No - Shopify's own help page states the domain is allowed only one A record at the root. Adding a second rather than replacing the first is a conflict, and the usual result is that the domain resolves unpredictably rather than simply picking one of the two.
  • Shopify documents the AAAA record alongside the A record as part of the same fixed set, so add it if your panel supports IPv6 records at all. A panel with no AAAA field simply cannot carry it, which is not something this generator can work around.
  • The apex A record only covers the bare domain; a visitor who types "www" in front of it needs the CNAME at "www" pointing at "shops.myshopify.com" to reach the same store, so skipping it leaves half of the two common ways people type the address unanswered.
  • No - it only checks that the DNS values match what Shopify's help page asks for. Whether Shopify itself has finished linking the domain is a status shown inside Shopify admin, which this generator never reaches.
