Squarespace DNS record generator
Get the four apex A records and the www CNAME Squarespace needs for a custom domain, ready to paste into any DNS panel.
Free, no accountIn your browser
The records below do not change with this, but the page will name your own domain rather than a generic one.
Result
Apex and www ready for your domain
Add these as A and CNAME records at the root of your domain, then add the verification CNAME's host from Squarespace itself.
- Info
The apex and www records below do not need your domain
Squarespace publishes the same four apex A records and the same www CNAME target for every custom domain it connects, so there is nothing to fill in to get those two right. Typing your domain only makes this page name it instead of speaking generically.
- Info
The verification CNAME needs a host only your Squarespace panel shows
Squarespace generates a one-off host for the verification CNAME the moment a domain is added inside your account - its own DNS Settings page notes that this first CNAME is the verification one and unique to each site - so there is no fixed value this generator could print for it. A realistic-looking placeholder here would be wrong for every domain that pasted it.
Open Settings, then Domains, then your domain, then DNS Settings inside Squarespace and copy the host it lists next to the verification CNAME.
- Passed
Four apex A records and one www CNAME, ready to paste exactly as shown
Squarespace documents all four apex A records as a set and the one www CNAME target separately; neither depends on which domain is connecting, so both are final the moment they are published.
Apex A records to publish
At @ (A)
Add all four together; Squarespace does not support connecting a domain with only one or two of them.
www CNAME to publish
At www (CNAME)
Publish this at the "www" host, not the apex - the apex takes the four A records above instead.
Verification CNAME target
At (host from your Squarespace panel) (CNAME)
This is the fixed target Squarespace documents. The host this record goes at is not shown here - see the finding above for where to find it.
DNS records for your domain
| Host | Type | Value |
|---|---|---|
| @ | A | 198.185.159.144 |
| @ | A | 198.185.159.145 |
| @ | A | 198.49.23.144 |
| @ | A | 198.49.23.145 |
| www | CNAME | ext-cust.squarespace.com |
| (host from your Squarespace panel) | CNAME | verify.squarespace.com |
The verification row's host is missing on purpose - it is generated per Squarespace account and only ever shown inside your own DNS Settings panel there.
- The verification CNAME's host value only exists inside your own Squarespace DNS Settings panel - this tool cannot generate it, only the fixed target it points to.
What this is
This squarespace dns records for custom domain generator lists the four fixed apex A records, the www CNAME, and a slot for the verification CNAME that only Squarespace own panel can fill in.
Squarespace points a custom domain at its own hosting with two separate record sets: four apex A records so the bare domain resolves without a CNAME at the apex, which the DNS standard forbids, and a www CNAME so the www version resolves to the same place. A third record, a verification CNAME, proves to Squarespace that you control the domain, but its host is generated per account and only shown inside your own Squarespace panel.
For where that apex rule comes from, see our blog guide "The DNS records a domain needs, and what each one actually does."
How to read the result
The table below is the full set to compare against your own DNS panel: four A records at the apex, one CNAME at www, and a verification CNAME whose host this page cannot see. Copy the apex and www records first, since those are what makes the site resolve at all, then go back into Squarespace to pick up the verification host.
Common mistakes
What goes wrong most often, and how to tell.
- Adding only one or two of the four apex A recordsSquarespace publishes all four together as the documented setup for the apex host; a domain pointed at only one or two of them is missing the redundancy Squarespace built the set for, even though a single one may resolve on its own.
- Searching this page for the verification CNAME hostIt does not exist anywhere outside your own Squarespace account, generated the moment you add the domain there, which is also why no generic guide, including this one, can print it for you.
Questions
What people ask about this tool.
- Yes. Squarespace runs its own load-balanced network behind several IP addresses rather than one, so all four A records at the apex host are expected and published together, not alternatives to pick from.
- It only exists inside your own Squarespace account, under Settings, Domains, your domain and then DNS Settings. This page can give you the fixed target the CNAME points to, but not the one-off host Squarespace generated for you.
- No. The www CNAME always points to the same Squarespace target no matter which domain or subdomain it sits on; only the host name on the left changes to match what you typed in.
- Squarespace documents all four as required together, so a partial set is unsupported rather than merely incomplete - add all four at once rather than phasing them in over time.
